SFBP #28: May Flowers LookBook

We are celebrating the season of fertility, bounty and life. Spring is here and the flowers are blooming. Dust the winter off your bike, wind flowers in your hair and come out as we dance with the spirits of spring.  If you’re not sure how to rock the perfect floral look, we’ve got some ideas to help you roll in style.  We can’t wait to see all the Roses and Daisies and Lilies, oh my!

Pink, small, and punctual,
Aromatic, low,
Covert in April,
Candid in May,

Dear to the moss,
Known by the knoll,
Next to the robin
In every human soul.

Bold little beauty,
Bedecked with thee,
Nature forswears
Antiquity.

SFBP #27 City Lights: Beatniks and Bridges Recap

We had such a great time on Friday, April 5th, when we took the the streets for SFBP #27 City Lights: Beatniks and Bridges. We hope you enjoyed the bikes, berets and Bay Lights!  Many thanks to all of the volunteers who took turns and helped direct Bike Party in the right direction.  We can’t do it with you!

Let’s get to the ride, shall we?  After meeting up behind the Ferry Building we rolled out for a long first leg through the Tenderloin and down to Warm Water Cove. We saw a lot of great costumes along the way and even got to ride along Market Street with our pal Maya, who may be the youngest bike partier on record at age 7!

New SFBP Flag

Our new LED flag marks the leader of the ride. If you want to make sure you’re going the right way, stay behind the flag! Many thanks to East Bay Bike Ride Crew for the inspiration and instruction on how to make this happen! Photo by miss mix for @sfbikeparty

After a great first stop at Warm Water Cove we made our way back towards the Embarcadero, took a loop around AT&T Park and headed to Cupid’s Span. Did you see the incredible views of the Bay Lights? Amazing!  Check out the photos below from our friends on Instagram.  Thanks to everyone who tagged photos from SF Bike Party with hashtag #sfbikeparty.  We love to see your shots from the ride!

After an awesome second stop at Cupid’s Span with block rocking beats from @zeropergallon and Black Betty and all those breath taking views, we headed off for one more leg along the Embarcadero to Pier 39.  It was too late to buy donuts and ride the carousel, but we hope the Sea Lions liked the music.  Thanks again to everyone who came out and helped out with this ride.  We are so stoked to see riders from all over the bay area and so many music bikes coming out to jam with us!  We can’t wait to see you on Friday, May 3rd for SFBP #28: May Flowers. We will be celebrating Spring with a bouquet of bikes!  Meet us at Balboa Park at 7:30pm.  We roll at 8:00!

According Wikipedia, the great knower of all things, “The word “beatnik” was coined by Herb Caen in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle on April 2, 1958.” We believe it, so we’re celebrating with a party on bikes!  If you need help with your look, we’ve got you covered (in black!).  Don’t forget your Bongos!

Special Announcement: Give Back!

Hey beautiful bike party peeps!  We wanted to let you know that we’re doing something a little different this month.  Instead providing a ride, we’re asking you to give back to the community that has given so much, our beautiful city.  In lieu of participating in an organized ride, please use the time you would spend to costume up and make plans with your friends to instead give back to our city, by volunteering to build the infrastructure we need at sfbike.org or making sure there’s a bike for everyone who wants one at sfyellowbike.org or any other way you can think of to give back.

We had an unfortunate incident at last month’s bike party where we believe that some of our folks defaced the beautiful last stop at Fort Point.  The organizers were heartbroken to hear this.  This is not who we are or why we do this, and it has given us pause.  We LOVE this city, and especially the spectacularly beautiful city and federal parks we use for our party stops. We feel so lucky to call this place home and work hard to make Bike Party a part of what makes San Francisco special.  We want to contribute to a vibe that embraces and celebrates this city’s beauty.  So, with that in mind, we would like to challenge all of you to make up for that black mark by giving back to the city, and using the time you would normally be celebrating the city and our community to give something back to them.  We will.

If you have other volunteer opportunities that you would like to share, please feel free to comment with links.

We’ll be back in April energized from our personal volunteer retreats to throw the kind of positive bike experience everyone expects from Bike Party.

At Bike Party, we strive to create and maintain an environment of love and respect.  When you join us, please remember “how we ride” and encourage others to respect our friends, neighbors and environment by riding responsibly and leaving no trace: http://sfbikeparty.wordpress.com/about/how-we-ride-details/.

SFBP #25 Terrible Twos Recap

Happy Birthday, y’all! Can you believe we just turned two? The last 2 years riding with you have been so awesome, and we are happy to report that over the holidays our Facebook fan page exceeded 4000 likes! Thank you for all the love and support over the past 2 years. From Pier 7 to Sutro Tower, we are blessed to ride this great city with you! And 2013 is already shinning bright! We can’t wait to keep rocking and rolling all year!

There were diapers, pacifiers and pyjamas galore at Civic Center on the first Friday of January for our Terrible Twos Birthday ride. It’s always great to see so many of you embracing the theme! If you have theme ideas, make sure to share them with us in the comments or via Facebook and Twitter. About 270 of us rolled out up Polk street towards Pacific Heights for the first leg of our Terrible Twos ride. We love to showcase the awesome route from downtown all the way to the Fort Mason, how great is it to avoid all the major hills?!  When we arrived at our first party stop, the Palace of Fine Arts, we were all surprised by a crew of fire dancers who brought their gear with them by bike! Thanks, guys! It’s still so inspiring to see the ways that you all choose to give back to bike party. Keep it coming, we love it!! And don’t you just love the Palace of Fine Arts? The stars were bright, the weather was perfect and the music was booming. Who could ask for more?

The Palace of Fine Arts was aglow with blinkies. That's @bikepretty for this awesome shot!

We could have stayed all night, but there was even more to see. Since we love hills in SF, our second leg took us rolling up and down through the Marina, Pacific Heights, the Western Addition and Alamo Square before we made our way to Alta Plaza Park. Arguably one of the best bike-able views of the city, our birthday present was a perfectly clear sky and a stunning vista. I’m pretty sure the view from the jungle gym was spectacular. What did you think?

After playing on the swings, admiring the view and getting our dance on at Alta Plaza, we headed down the hill and up again towards Golden Gate Park for one final party stop at the Koret Children’s Quarter Playground. Thanks to all the volunteers to stepped up and took turns when we fell short on the last leg (and to all the other volunteers as well!) We honestly can’t keep bike party rolling without your help.  We need volunteers at every turn to guide bike partiers in the right direction. Golden Gate Park was a great place to party, as always, and we were pleased to see so many people dancing and enjoying the fire show.  We hope you had an awesome time! We can’t wait to see you next month for our February ride I ♡ Bike Party on Friday, February 1st.  It’s National Wear Red Day, so please wear red and show your BP love. We’ll be hitting up some iconic SF spots and painting the town red! Meet us at Fort Mason Green at 7:30.  We roll at 8:00!
