sfbp #22 THEME: hardly strictly bike party

Guitars & bicycles
Hillbilly music
Open Open streets that we call home
Guitars & bicycles
Hillbilly music
The only thing that keep me hanging on
The only thing that keep me hanging on….

(Lyrics adapted from Dwight Yoakym’s Guitars & Cadillacs)

What do hardly strictly bluegrass & SFBP have in common? Bicycles & banjos. They are two free events happening in SF that celebrate music. You’re in trouble if you have to go pee. If there’s music you don’t like, you can always go find other music you DO like. They both make people happy. And, finally, they are both happening on the same day in October.

Come ride with us after friday’s hardly strictly lineup comes to an end. we will meet at a place to be determined in golden gate park. stay tuned for updates and a route!

September Theme: Summer of Love

“Something is happening here
But you don’t know what it is,
Do you, Mr. Jones?”

Summer, 1967: the Straight World looks on in disbelief as Flower Children arrive by the thousands, flooding into the parks and classic Victorian mansions of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district. It’s a massive rebellion, a veritable Happening, a revolutionary MOMENT.

That was 45 years ago. The Summer of Love is ancient history. But now there’s a whole new NOW. We’re the next generation… a whole new Trip. A new kind of PARTY!

This time, the Movement is MOVING. In this new Aquarian Age, we’re rolling FURTHERbeyond Psychedelic to something bigger, vaster, more surrealistic: it’s a CYCLE-DELIC Gathering of the Tribes.

This September, Bike Party brings PURE LOVE to the streets of San Francisco!

The Man can’t bust our music, brother! PEDAL POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

August 2012 Theme: Twins to Twin Peaks

“Thru the darkness of Future Past
the magician longs to see
one chants out between two worlds
Fire – bike with me.”

Twin Peaks: landmark of our friendly, wholesome, respectable community. An outpost where even a handsome FBI agent can procure a Damn Fine Cup of Coffee, “black as midnight on a moonless night.”

But locals have long whispered about strange occurrences in this foggy nether region of San Francisco. Between these two pinnacles, one Ordinary and Good, the other Mysterious and Evil, is said to lurk a passageway to another world.

Along this winding uphill path, travelers have been known to wander into a place known only as the Black Lodge, wherein their dreaming minds come face to face with their own opposing doppelgängers. Here, dwarves dance backwards, speech is unintelligible, and long forgotten television shows haunt the memory.

Many is the bicyclist who has lost her way!

This August 3rd, the San Francisco Bike Party will journey into this great unknown, in search of our own evil twins! We have no idea where this will lead us, but we have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.

April Theme: Animal Kingdom!

San Francisco: an urban jungle ruled by wild beasts. Some of us walk on two legs, some walk on four legs, others walk on six legs. Some of us fly, some hop, some saunter and some crawl or slither. And some of us roll around on two wheels!

On April 6, the cages will open and the zoo will be liberated! The kings and queens of the jungle will prowl the night with glowing eyes, delighting and terrorizing the city’s human inhabitants with ferocious displays of wild nature. Bring your fur, your horns, your tails, your gnashing teeth, your savage self, and join us for a WILD evening in exploration of our ANIMAL KINGDOM.

SFBP #12 Lookbook: Aurora Borealis, The Winter Lights

[Next ride, Friday December 2 at 7:30 PM ~ Starting at Potrero Del Sol Park (25th St & Utah) ~ Route Map http://g.co/maps/sz86q]

The air is starting to turn, dark and chilly. The leaves are starting to turn and fall. The sun is setting earlier. But in the darkness comes a glow of ethereal light. It’s the Aurora Borealis, the northern lights that will dance across the sky like winter spirits.

Check out the following ideas on how you can participate in our next ride’s theme!

*************************************************************************************************************
Bike Lights!

Don’t forget about your faithful steed! Decorate her with more than just your basic lights. The Bay Area is chock full of local artists and engineers who make nontraditional bicycle lights. Several drugstore chains also carry battery operated lights you can use to gussy up your bike.

Should it be a tandem bike light party?

Good ol’ fashion L-wire!

digging on edgar's spoke lights
Or battery operated ones you can pick up at your local drug store’s holiday section.

happy holidays

vacant look + ill fitting helmet are made up for by bright lights

Or even bike specific lights.

*************************************************************************************************************
Why limit yourself to lights? How about… Northern Sports!

Invoke the spirit of our Northern cousins who participate in the sport of curling. Grab yourself a broom, some warm weather clothing, and rock out with your stone out!

(best pants EVER)

*************************************************************************************************************
Or… Winter Spirits!

Got blue pants and nowhere to go, well you’re in luck. Jack Frost is an iconic winter myth that can be captured and brought to Bike Party. Who doesn’t want the sprite that embodies snow to come on our ride?

*************************************************************************************************************
Or did you consider… Tsagaan Sar!

Gallop on over from your yurt, to celebrate an early Tsagaan Sar. This is a traditional Mongolian holiday where the first new moon after the winter darkness is celebrated. Mount your trusty steed (or bike for that matter) and celebrate the holiday by greeting your family and friends.

*************************************************************************************************************
This should be a great opportunity to stretch those costuming muscles! Bring your blinkies, bring your Xmas lights, bring your glowing light saber, and help us illuminate the city of our dreams!
