This first Friday of January marks the one year anniversary of the birth of our beloved San Francisco Bike Party. To mark this glorious occasion, we cordially invite you to join us for an evening of formal and not so formal socializing, in the company of other bicyclists. Together, we shall partake of a slow, civilizing stroll through our own fair city.

Formal attire, while not required, is heartily encouraged. Tips, for those unsure of the decorum, are included below.

San Francisco Bike Party cordially invites you to join us the sixth of January, two-thousand and twelve for a formal birthday gala under the stars.

Bring your best and join us as we celebrate our hatching day!

Dave rides the very recognizable and very bad ass chopper bike. And the best part is, he MADE it himself! He comes to SF all the way from Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz County just to ride with us!!! This man is the epitome of easy rider cool and someone we can look forward to seeing every first Friday of the month. If you ride next to him, you can hear those cards making a chopper-like sound. But it’s better than a motorcycle, because it’s human powered, just the way we like it!

The next time you ride with SFBP, drop by and say hello to Dave. As always, ride safe and ride cool, just like Dave.

We started out on the grassy knolls of Potrero Del Sol skate park, where we gathered overlooking the skaters. A lot of you went to watch the skaters show off some vertical skills while we were waiting for the speaker bikes to show up.

Many of you wore some fantastic lights, showcasing some pretty epic SFBP skills.

There were plenty of amazing light shows!

Great bike lights.

And lots of familiar faces.

From the park we wound our way up through the brightly lit sections of the Mission, starting along 24th street.

Where we ran into a few fantastically dressed pedestrians…

and also were among some people ready to BIKEPARTY!

And our first stop brought us to the end of Townsend St at the South Beach Park on Embarcadero. We partied here, next to the ball park and gigantic sculptures. We also got to smell the water, if you know what I mean…

We got to check out people’s lights, both on their persons and on their bikes.

oh wow, do we love this new music cargo tandem bike! the music was awesome coming out of those speakers! they kept the back of the ride happy and totally ready to bike party!

People danced.

These ladies were amazing!

There was this guy, who was VERY enthusiastic about Bike Party! We love your energy!

And around Embarcadero, our ride made our way though downtown over to Portsmouth Square for our second party stop.

After saying our goodbyes to Chinatown, we wound up through the Stockton tunnel to Japan Town and then finally through the Fillmore. Although this ride was a bit longer than our previous ones, a good group of people stuck it out til the end.

Thanks to all of you who stuck it out til the very end! We saw a lot of familiar faces. AND it was our longest bike party route yet! We like to mix it up at SFBP, and this ride was no exception.

The air is starting to turn, dark and chilly. The leaves are starting to turn and fall. The sun is setting earlier. But in the darkness comes a glow of ethereal light. It’s the Aurora Borealis, the northern lights that will dance across the sky like winter spirits.

Don’t forget about your faithful steed! Decorate her with more than just your basic lights. The Bay Area is chock full of local artists and engineers who make nontraditional bicycle lights. Several drugstore chains also carry battery operated lights you can use to gussy up your bike.

Should it be a tandem bike light party?

Good ol’ fashion L-wire!

Or battery operated ones you can pick up at your local drug store’s holiday section.

Or even bike specific lights.

Invoke the spirit of our Northern cousins who participate in the sport of curling. Grab yourself a broom, some warm weather clothing, and rock out with your stone out!

Got blue pants and nowhere to go, well you’re in luck. Jack Frost is an iconic winter myth that can be captured and brought to Bike Party. Who doesn’t want the sprite that embodies snow to come on our ride?

Gallop on over from your yurt, to celebrate an early Tsagaan Sar. This is a traditional Mongolian holiday where the first new moon after the winter darkness is celebrated. Mount your trusty steed (or bike for that matter) and celebrate the holiday by greeting your family and friends.
